This is Blair. C： Hi guys, 欢迎大家收听早安英文, this is Ceci. C：Summer 你觉不觉得，跟往届相比，今年奥运会的氛围好像特别尤其的热烈。 S：Really? I didn't realize. I guess I'm pretty devoted and excited every year. C: haha right. 毕竟你是咱早安的运动担当啊，奥运会次次都会看啊。 Maybe I felt different because I'm influenced by you guys. S: 哈哈今年被我们拉着看了几场比赛，觉得还挺有意思的是吧。 C：Yeah. Actually, I got interested in the history and development of the Olympics ever since, and I found something interesting while doing research. 我发现了一届非常非常特殊的奥运会。 S: 啊你说的是不是抗美援朝种的“战俘奥运会”？ C：Yeah! How do you know? S: Haha I've just read about it on the news. 我刚好看到新闻，说姜文要拍这个题材的电影了。 C：Wow, I didn't know about that. But year, it's a great subject for films. 这肯定会是个非常精彩的故事。 S: 嗯不过现在电影还再保密阶段，一时半会儿还看不到啊。但是我们可以先来给大家介绍一下这段奇妙又动人的历史。 C: Yeah it makes for a beautiful story。 C：　You know, I'm curious. Who brought this up first? 是谁最先想到，要在战俘营里办奥运会的呢？ S: 其实最开始就是战俘们自己提议的，the prisoners of war requested a large-scale sports meeting.  C: 诶我们今天要讲的主角，就是这个prisoner of war, 它就表示战俘、战犯。它的首字母缩写就是P-O-W， pow, 所以像我们说战俘营，也可以直接说a POW camp。 S：对，或者在上下文明确的情况下，我们也可以直接用prisoner来表示俘虏、战俘，For example, he was taken prisoner by rebel soldiers. 他被叛军俘虏了。 C: So based on the recommendations of the prisoners of war, the General Political Department of the Volunteer Army established the "Sports and Entertainment Committee." S: And in September 1952, the committee proposed to the prisoner-of-war administrator a proposal to hold a sports meeting in a prisoner-of-war camp. C: 所以你看，当时委员会向战俘管理员提议的是举办运动会， a sports meeting. C：嗯就是这样，确定了这次活动的名称，叫做‘中国人民志愿军碧潼战俘营奥林匹克运动会’。 S：Yeah, an interesting fact to note，我们知道参加比赛的运动员都是战俘嘛，他们来自美、英、法、加等14个国家和地区，因为并没有中国人参加，所以它成为了唯一一届东道主无权参加的奥运会 C: So did the athletes enjoy the games? S: Yeah they really did. 特别是那些在赛场上取得名次的运动员们，都可激动了。从这名美国战俘德尔马给他母亲的信中就可以看出来。 C： Yeah, let's read it together. American prisoner of war Delmar G. Miller said in a letter to his mother: "I participated in a sports meeting in the North Korean Volunteer Army POW camp. Athletes from more than a dozen countries all participated. This is unprecedented in the world... S：确实啊，在战俘营举办的运动会，这是世界上从没有过的事。这里用到的这个词， unprecedented， 它其实是 precedented 的否定形式，precedented用来指一些决策啊、制度啊是有先例的，那加上否定前缀un, unprecedented 它就表示前所未有的、空前的、史无前例的。 C: 没错，而且办奥运会啊，肯定还是要有奖品的。德尔马在信里就说到了，Many of the prizes I won are exquisite handicrafts made in China, which I like very much. When I go back, I will bring them to you so that you can share my honor." S：嗯所以他们的奖品都是手工艺品，这种手工用品呢，我们用handicraft这个词去表示。另外他还用了一个词去形容这些手工艺品，exquisite。 C：Yeah exquisite means extremely beautiful or carefully made  S: 嗯就是非常精美的、精致的。这个词两种读法都可以， /ɪkˈskwɪzɪtˌˈekskwɪzɪt/ ， 区别在于重音位置不同，放在第二个和第一个音节都是可以的。 C：但是要注意下，重音放在第二个音节时，它的第一个音节发短元音/ɪ/， /ɪkˈskwɪzɪt/，而重音放在第一个音节的时候，它就读/e/， /ˈekskwɪzɪt/. S: So from these details, you can really tell that they were not muddling through. They really took it seriously. C: 没错啊，不是在敷衍了事，而是非常认真地在筹备。这里用到了一个短语，muddle through, 它表示胡乱应付过去，或者说敷衍了事，for example, we'll muddle through somehow. 我们能想办法应付过去。 S：If you search online, you can still find some pictures. 网上还能找到很多记录了当时的比赛的照片。 C：These photos have had a very positive significance for the image of New China and the Volunteers after being spread in the world. S： Yeah because they broke the lies of the Chinese military's torture of prisoners fabricated by the American propaganda department. C: 这样一来，美国宣传部门捏造的这些谎言就不攻自破了，fabricate它在这里就表示编造、捏造的意思，读的时候要注意，这个单词里有两个字母A，第一个读梅花音，第二个读双元音ei, 然后重音放在第一个音节，连起来就是fabricate。 S: Right, another word that is a little difficult to pronounce is propaganda. propaganda这个单词它有四个音节，重音放在第三个音节 /ˌprɒpəˈɡændə/ ，它表示宣传，尤其时这种政治组织的宣传、鼓吹。 C：所以说这届特殊的奥运会它有着非常重要的政治意义，it enabled our army not only to win the battle on the battlefield, but also to the moral high ground. S: 嗯就是说我们不只在战场上赢得了胜利，在道义制高点上也占据了优势。这里的moral high ground, 根据字面意思理解就好，它就表示道德高地、道德制高点。 C：对我们说占据了道德高地，就可以说take the moral high ground. You know, I really like this special Olympic game. S: Yeah me too. 来自不同国家的人，身份差异悬殊，在这样简陋的条件下，全身心的投入一场体育赛事，这难道不是奥林匹克精神的最好体现吗？ C：Yeah we didn't have control over the war or the politics of our countries. We didn't have control over where we were born, where we came from or were going to.
