Drivers of deforestation in the Colombian Amazon

The Colombian Amazon is at risk. Driven by growing global demand for commodities such as beef, gold and cocaine, the drivers of deforestation are interconnected. They also cause environmental degradation and violate the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities. While this video focuses on the Colombian context, dynamics of deforestation are not limited by borders. A regional approach towards safeguarding the Amazon region is therefore of great importance. Understanding the dynamics of deforestation enables us to take the next steps to end forest crime, protect environmental rights and stop deforestation. But understanding alone is not enough. Together with Fundación para la Conservación y el Desarrollo Sostenible (FCDS), Ambiente y Sociedad and Mongabay Latam we work to end forest crime and improve the territorial rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities in the Amazon.
