"Penwald: 2: 8 circles" a performance by Tony Orrico hosted by Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences at the Keck Center, Washington DC on Thursday, May 20, 2010. Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body, and a relationship between performer and audience. Join Tony Orrico for a unique and thought-provoking performance experience in the Keck Center Atrium that explores concepts of movement and drawing. Using the dimensions of his body as measure, Orrico references geometry, biomechanics, endurance, and ideas represented by da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. His performance challenges constructed ideas about what constitutes art and where it can be seen. Orrico has also been deeply influenced by his experiences as a member of Trisha Brown Dance Company and Shen Wei Dance Arts. Both artists blend the lines between visual artwork and choreography, often using movement to create two-dimensional pieces or presenting dance as an installation. Currently, Orrico is working with performance artist Marina Abramovic at the Museum of Modern Art in a retrospective of her career. This work requires the performer to hold positions of standing, lying, or sitting for long periods of time, often referred to as durational performances.
