Malayalam Explanation of the Short story " No Witchcraft for Sale " by Doris Lessing English Summary : When the Farquars have their first and only child, Teddy, their cook, a native man named Gideon, feels immediately fond of the little boy. When the boy is six years old, and a snake spits venom in his eyes, Gideon saves him from going blind by using some roots known only to the local native people. Soon the word spreads about the event and a scientist from the city, who does not believe in native remedies, comes up to verify the story. He asks the Farquars to help him convince Gideon to show them the plant which cured Teddy. Initially, Gideon refuses, but he eventually seems to give in to their pressures. He takes the Farquars and the scientist on a very long walk in the veldt looking for the root plant. After some time, Gideon hands them a plant which could have been picked anywhere on the way. The scientist leaves knowing he has been mocked. Years later, the Farquars and Gideon still joke about the useless walk the man made them take looking for the root, although for Gideon it still remains an emotional issue. Structure of the story : “No Witchcraft for Sale” follows a traditional plot structure which revolves around the healing of a white boy by a native African using a root plant and the consequences of this event. At a deeper level, the story illustrates the conflict between traditional remedies and modern medicine, and also between the white people and the native people with regards to medicine. Title Significance : The title of the story illustrates in an ironical way the main morale of the narrative. “No Witchcraft for Sale” refers to the African natives’ refusal to share with the white population their knowledge about the healing power of local herbs: “The magical drug would remain where it was, unknown and useless except for the tiny scattering of Africans who had the knowledge...” The title points specifically to Gideon’s reluctant attitude towards the scientists who come to discover which root was used by Gideon in order to treat Teddy.....
