Active ingredients are the power players in your skincare — the ones that actually do something. Think of them as the ingredients responsible for solving specific skin concerns like acne, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, or dryness. In short: Actives = targeted treatment. Examples: • Retinol: anti-aging & acne • Vitamin C: brightening & antioxidant • Niacinamide: calming & oil control • Salicylic Acid: exfoliating & acne treatment • Hyaluronic Acid: deep hydration Why do we use them? If you're investing time and money into skincare, you want results, right? Actives are what get you from ‘meh’ to glow-up. Actives can: • Reduce acne and inflammation • Brighten dull skin • Minimize fine lines • Improve texture and tone • Strengthen your skin barrier But here’s the catch: Using the wrong one — or using it the wrong way — can actually make things worse. So let’s talk about how to use them properly. How to Use Actives Host Alright, this is the part you don’t want to skip. Let’s go through the most popular actives and how to use them — safely. 1. Retinol (Vitamin A) What it does: Boosts cell turnover, reduces wrinkles, clears acne. How to use: • Start with a low concentration (0.5%) • Use only at night • Always pair with sunscreen during the day • Introduce slowly: 1–2 times a week, then build up 2. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) What it does: Brightens skin, fades dark spots, protects from free radicals. How to use: • Apply in the morning, before sunscreen • Use 10–20% concentration for best results • Store in a dark, cool place to prevent oxidation 3. Niacinamide What it does: Reduces redness, controls oil, strengthens the skin barrier. How to use: • Gentle enough for daily use, AM or PM • Works well with other actives like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C • Look for 5–10% formulas 4. Salicylic Acid (BHA) What it does: Exfoliates inside pores, clears blackheads and acne. How to use: • Use 2–3 times a week (or more if your skin tolerates it) • Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin • Don’t mix with strong retinol unless guided by a pro 5. Hyaluronic Acid What it does: Hydrates by pulling water into the skin. How to use: • Use on damp skin, then seal in with a moisturizer • Can be used twice daily • Works great with all other actives Pro Tips: Host: "Mixing actives? Proceed with caution. Some combos work great — others, not so much." Good combos: • Vitamin C + SPF (antioxidant protection!) • Niacinamide + Retinol (soothing + repair) • Hyaluronic Acid + Anything (hydration booster) Bad combos (unless prescribed): • Retinol + AHAs/BHAs = irritation risk • Vitamin C + Benzoyl Peroxide = cancels each other out Active ingredients can transform your skin — when used the right way. Start slow, pay attention to how your skin reacts, and don’t be afraid to consult a dermatologist if you're unsure."
