A brain contusion is a form of traumatic brain injury (TBI) where the brain tissue becomes bruised, typically due to direct impact or sudden force during an accident, fall, or sports injury. This bruising leads to bleeding, swelling, and localized damage to brain tissue. Unlike a concussion, which may not show up on imaging, a brain contusion is usually visible on CT scans or MRIs and is classified as a focal injury, meaning it affects a specific area of the brain. Symptoms vary depending on the severity and location of the injury but may include confusion, loss of consciousness, headache, nausea, memory issues, or neurological changes like weakness or speech difficulties. Management depends on the size and location of the contusion. Observation, hospital monitoring, anti-swelling medications, and in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary—especially if there’s risk of increased intracranial pressure or hematoma formation. Prompt evaluation and monitoring by a neurosurgical team are essential to ensure safe recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
