The other day, we spoke with a woman about her open marriage... and what she said FLOORED us! They had set up all the rules, regulations, and boundaries. However, her husband ended up in a “real affair” with one of his partners (this didn’t shock us, but what she said NEXT did). https://your.marriagehelper.com/spous... And while it seems that open marriages are becoming more common, the majority of people still want a monogamous relationship. Even so, many articles and videos detail how to have a “successful open marriage.” Here’s what most of them say: “Set rules and boundaries, discuss what’s shared about the other relationship with your spouse, and start an open marriage when your relationship is ‘stable.’” The BIG QUESTION is... if a person already has a perfect marriage, why have an open marriage? If you’ve thought about this yourself, or if you have had/are currently in an open marriage, please comment below. We would love to know more about your decision to have an open marriage. We believe there are some specific reasons behind why people want to try an open marriage. Even though the articles say “the best time to start your open marriage is when you have high levels of commitment and feel great about your marriage…” there is something MISSING in your marriage. Whether it’s sexual, emotional, etc there must be something missing. Or, maybe you are not happy with how things are and you want to be fulfilled instead of fixing what’s missing. However, almost every time, one (or both) get hurt when a marriage is opened. There can be jealousy, guilt, and regret. Even if you set every boundary possible with an open marriage, someone can get hurt. Boundaries have to do with LOGIC, so when someone is jealous, angry, hurt, etc. the emotions are going to win. Additionally, it’s highly likely that one (or both of you) will fall in love with someone else… and then what’s next? Are you willing to stop all of the relationships? Are you going to be okay going back to how things were? I’m not saying you shouldn’t be happy and have a good life. However, I am suggesting that you place your focus on how well you can love your spouse, your kids, your family. Ask yourself, “What can I do to make my marriage better- inside of my marriage?” Once you open your marriage, you cannot “undo” the harm done, the broken-trust, or the guilt. And it’s hard to think of this when you chasing things that feel good “in-the-moment.” The problem is the “moment” does NOT last.
