Preah Khan Temple Preah Khan is one of the major temples in the Angkor region near Siem Reap, Cambodia. It was built in 1191 CE during the reign of the Khmer king Jayavarman VII, one of the greatest rulers of the Khmer Empire. The temple was constructed to honor his father, King Dharanindravarman II, and was originally dedicated to Mahayana Buddhism. The name Preah Khan means “Sacred Sword.” According to historical inscriptions, the temple was built on the site where Jayavarman VII defeated the Cham invaders, marking an important victory for the Khmer Empire. In its early days, Preah Khan was more than just a temple. It functioned as a large religious, educational, and administrative center, sometimes described as a Buddhist monastery and university with more than 1,000 teachers and thousands of monks and workers living around the complex. The temple city may have supported up to 100,000 people, including farmers who supplied food for the community. Architecturally, the complex covers a large area surrounded by moats and multiple enclosure walls, with many corridors, shrines, and courtyards. Although it was primarily Buddhist, sections of the temple were also dedicated to Hindu gods such as Shiva and Vishnu, reflecting the religious blending common in the Angkor period. After the decline of the Khmer Empire, the temple gradually fell into ruin and became partially covered by jungle. Today it is preserved as part of the Angkor Archaeological Park, where restoration projects have been carried out since the 1990s to conserve the monument. ✅ In brief: Preah Khan is a 12th-century temple complex that served as a religious center, monastery, and city during the height of the Khmer Empire and remains one of the most impressive historical sites near Siem Reap.
