In a –78°C blizzard at the bottom of a remote valley, an 80-year-old couple survives in a half-buried round stone dome house. At dawn they fight off wolves that test the edge of their small flock of snow sheep, then spend the day shoveling snow, chopping crooked dead trees into firewood and tending a smoky wooden shed where strips of meat slowly cure. Between trips to the sheep pen and the woodpile, they melt snow for water and guard their clay hearth so the fire never dies. As night falls and the wind rises again, the glow of their stone-walled shelter and the line of smoking meat become the only proof that life still holds out against the wolves and the cold.
