The decision was driven by President Roosevelt's belief that Nazi Germany posed the greatest long-term existential threat to the American mainland and the necessity of keeping the Soviet Union and Britain in the fight to prevent Germany from dominating the entire European continent. While the U.S. Navy and public favored a Pacific-focused war, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill successfully argued that if Germany were not prioritized, the fall of Moscow or London would make dislodging the Axis from Europe nearly impossible. Interestingly, the video notes that this strategy existed largely in name only during the early years, as the U.S. still funneled massive resources into the Pacific to stall Japanese expansion, only truly shifting the bulk of its weight to Europe in late 1943 during the lead-up to D-Day.
