Various of website showing Mughniyeh as one of America's most wanted STORYLINE: Lebanon has been hit by a series of explosions, some of them political assassinations, amid a deepening 14-month political crisis. A roadside bomb exploded on January 8th near a United Nations patrol south of Beirut, lightly wounding two peacekeepers, UN and Lebanese officials said. The explosion rocked the town of Rmeileh, near the southern coastal city of Sidon. Smoke was seen billowing from the scene, witnesses said. On January 15th an explosion apparently targeted a US Embassy vehicle in northern Beirut, killing four Lebanese and injuring a local embassy employee, an American official said. A State Department spokesman said two embassy employees - including the driver - were in the vehicle damaged in the blast, which could be heard across the Lebanese capital and sent gray smoke billowing near the Mediterranean coast. On January 24th an explosion went off in a Christian neighbourhood of Beirut, killing at least one person and setting several vehicles ablaze, security officials and local media reported. The private Future TV station reported that a "security convoy" was targeted, and that at least three people were killed. It didn't identify who was in the convoy. The blast hit a street in Hazmieh, on the Christian eastern edge of the capital. On January 27th protesters angry about electricity rationing clashed with Lebanese troops in Beirut, and seven people were killed, hospital and security officials said. Hundreds of Shiite Muslims opposed to the government rioted and burned tyres, blocking some major roads in the Lebanese capital and its southern suburbs. Scores of troops arrived shortly afterward and opened fire in the air to disperse the demonstrators, they said. The victim and the four wounded belonged to Fatah, a Lebanese security official said. There was no immediate word on casualties among Jund al-Sham militants.
