(8 Jul 1997) Eng/French/Nat Hundreds of foreign aid workers and tourists are trapped in the Cambodian capital - Phnom Penh, after the outbreak of fighting between troops loyal to the country's co- premiers. They have been told not to leave their houses - many have taken refuge in a five star hotel. Fighting over the weekend claimed over 50 lives - and already funeral workers are burying the dead. The airport is closed - and tourists are being told flight bookings will be taken - but no one knows when they will start flying again. SOUNDBITE: (English) We can make a booking for you but we don't know if fly or not tomorrow." SUPER CAPTION: Name Unknown, Travel Agent Travellers trapped in the capital are finding their tickets are useless. SOUNDBITE: (English) 'I was supposed to fly Saturday on the evening flight, but since then I haven't been able to get out, they don't know when, they don't know what's happening with the airport - how much damage is in the airport - so I don't know. All they said now is come back tomorrow.' SUPER CAPTION: Simon Ellis,Tourist The US Embassy and the French embassy are still advising extreme caution in the city and telling people not take non-essential journeys from their homes. Many of the foreign aid workers and tourists are holed up in a five star hotel , the Cambodiana - where there is an emergency centre for foreigners. Tension is still high after overnight looting. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I would like to come back to Cambodia if things simmer down because I really love this country and I love the people here - but it is too dangerous right now to stay here. I want to go home." SUPER CAPTION: Adrienne Valencia, from New Jersey, Assembly of God worker There are rumours that the airport will reopen for flights on Wednesday or Thursday. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The biggest disappointment is that we have to leave the country - we're here to help the people of Cambodia because we care about them and want to share the love of Jesus with them and having to leave is a disappointment to many of them." SUPER CAPTION: Troy Tabor, Media Director of the Assembly for God This French tourist - who has been trapped has been working in the kitchens of the hotel - just to help out. SOUNDBITE: (French) "Fear prevents us from doing anything - I prefer to stay aware and keep myself busy to keep myself calm mentally." SUPER CAPTION: Amour Rawyler, Tourist from Paris For now all they can all do is wait.
