Join us on a serene journey through the ancient graveyard of St. Mark's Church in Woodhouse, Leeds, as we uncover the stories etched in stone. In this late January afternoon walk, we traverse the pathways lined with weathered headstones and monuments dating back centuries. Discover the rich history of St. Mark's Church, from its humble beginnings to its significance in the local community. The church formerly known as the Parish Church of St. Mark, an Anglican church until its closure in 2005. In 2014, it was reopened as the evangelical Gateway Church. Constructed between 1823 and 1826 by Peter Atkinson Junior and RH Sharp as a Church of England Commissioners' Church, it underwent alterations to the window tracery and tower in 1873 by RL Adams and J Kelly. St. Mark's stands as one of three Commissioner churches erected in Leeds, and notably, it is the sole survivor among them. Following its closure in 2005, the church gradually fell into a state of disrepair. However, in 2014, Gateway Church undertook the renovation efforts, restoring the historic landmark to its former glory. As we meander through the graveyard, we encounter the remnants of bygone eras, where time seems to stand still amidst the overgrown foliage and weather-beaten gravestones. Amidst the solemn atmosphere, we pay homage to the brave souls who rest in peace, including a poignant Commonwealth War Graves military grave, a reminder of sacrifices made. Witness the blend of decay and restoration as we explore the varied landscape of the churchyard. While some areas bear the scars of time with damaged stones and encroaching wilderness, others gleam with signs of meticulous renovation, preserving the legacy of those who came before us. Join us on this reflective journey as we unravel the mysteries and heritage of St. Mark's Churchyard, a timeless sanctuary steeped in history and reverence.
