Cigar Review Aksum by Foundation Cigars When Smoked: November, 2024 Obtained from: single purchase from local shop Rested/aged 1+ months in my humidor Size: Skinny Robusto (5 inches x 48) Approximate cost: US$14 See ratings below In this video I review the Aksum by Foundation Cigars. This was the claro wrapper as opposed to the Maduro wrapper. The name Aksum comes from an ancient civilization that was in the part of Africa that is now Ethiopia. Aksum is actually a re-name from the cigar’s earlier name, Metapa – according to Foundation Cigars, there was an intellectual property issue with the previous name. If I was naming a cigar and my two options were Metapa and Aksum, I’d ask if there was a third option. In any case, let’s talk construction – this is a nice looking cigar, pigtail cap with soft box press and a medium-dark tan Sumatra Ecuadorian-grown wrapper around a broadleaf binder. Draw was tight at first, and burn was problematic all the way through. Although I wouldn’t describe the burn as awful, it required an annoying number of re-lights. Other than that it held together well, no unraveling or other calamities. My big beef with the Aksum (beside the name) is the flavor. It was a mild cigar, I’d say medium body tops. Flavor was…well, the best word is boring. Or maybe “eh.” Not awful, but very unmemorable. Leather with a bit of citrus undertone, that’s it. The whole experience was over quickly though, maybe 40 minutes at most.
