This video includes an overview of eye plaque radiation techniques used by Paul T Finger MD at The New York Eye Cancer Center. Anterior Uveal Melanoma Plaque Radiation: It shows that melanomas of the iris and ciliary body can be treated, with sparing of the pupil. Destroying the tumor in place also spares the iris from being removed. Unlike surgical resection, radiation allows the patient to preserve their pupil and eliminates the chronic dilation seen after iris resection. In addition, unlike surgical resection, the plaque is an external ocular procedure, the eye globe is not opened. This eliminates most of the risk associated with opening the eye for tumor removal. Choroidal Melanomas Around the Optic Nerve: In many centers, patients with melanomas that wrap around the optic disc are treated by enucleation or suffer higher local recurrence rates. In this video, Dr. Finger shows how his "Finger's Slotted Plaques" can be used to spare patients from having to lose their eye and significantly reduce local treatment failure.
