Work boats and poor guy boats don't have marine paint on them. You can roll gelcoat and it makes a pebbly orange-peel type surface and a thicker protective layer than paint. Five gallons of gelcoat costs about $200 US. This is far less than marine paint. The boat was sanded with 40 grit sandpaper, then 100 grit. The sanding powder was brushed off, it was wiped down with acetone, and several coats of gelcoat were rolled on. All coats were mixed with hardener, and the final coat had hardener and a wax solution mixed in. The wax winds up covering the surface as the volatiles flash off, and prevents oxygen from reacting with the gelcoat so it can harden completely. The bottom will get ablative paint but everything above water will get gelcoat. It is possible to sand and polish the gelcoat to a glossy surface, but this takes a lot of time. Just rolling the gelcoat on and going over it very lightly with the roller after the surface is coated, will remove marks from the edge of the roller, leaving a uniformly pebbly surface.
