"This work is dedicated to and inspired by Thomas P. Stafford, Air Force pilot & NASA Astronaut. While researching Stafford’s life, what struck me most was his focused ambition to fly. Not just to fly, but to fly faster and further. There came a time when he hit what he described as the limit of the Air Force, so he went to NASA to follow that ambition to fly faster and farther. As soon as he learned about the mission to the moon, he wanted to be on board. When asked why the Apollo program should be important to remember, he stated that it shows what this country can do in such a short time when we focus and work together in a bipartisan way. He is best known for his extraordinary number of space rendezvous and his flights on Gemini 6, Gemini 9, and Apollo 10; the last being essential since it developed the procedures that would help Apollo 11 land on the moon. Written in a mostly minimalist style, this work is my response to Stafford’s life and ambitions. Ignition starts with a small idea with large ambitions. It pushes through a series of gates that unlock the path to the beauty of space flight. Sections are determined by pattern hemiolas with each gate unlocking the next pattern in the expanding order. The first section is two against three, second is three against four, third is three against five, and the final is four against five. I also view these sections as ever ascending upwards away from the earth, breaking through the clouds, flying over the clouds, and then finally breaking away from the earth’s atmosphere. The final section I imagine as what would be the wondrous joy to fly through space. I would like to extend a gracious thank you to Micheal Barnes and Southwestern Oklahoma State University for the opportunity to work on this piece." -Julien Monick https://www.mbarnespercussion.com https://www.swosu.edu/music
