Comparative Anatomy of the Spleen (horse, dog and small ruminants)
The spleen is depending on the species, situated caudal to the diaphragm within the left cranial part of the abdomen. It is located entirely within the peritoneum in all domestic mammals other then ruminants. The spleen is attached to the stomach by the gastrosplenic ligament, which is part of the omentum. In the horse an additional ligament is present between the spleen and the left kidney, renosplenic ligament, creating the nephrosplenic space, in which parts of the intestines can become trapped resulting in colic.
