I pulled into the Cades Cove Picnic Area about 7:45 a.m. loaded up my backpack, gathered my things, and said good morning to my friends, who were also taking the Anthony Creek Trail route up to Rocky Top today. I started my tracker on my Apple Watch and began running. It didn't take very long to spot a black bear in the creek. I reached for my cell phone, but my hiking pole fell, scaring the bear away before I could get any photos...a frustrating moment! This is a strenuous hike with a total elevation gain of 3,665 feet. I took frequent walking breaks, especially on the steepest sections, to control my breathing. Despite the climbs, I made it to the Appalachian Trail (AT) in less than 2 hours. Once up on Rocky Top, I took my pack off, ate a snack, and rested a bit. I then decided to continue my run over to Thunderhead Mountain, which is only 0.6 miles past Rocky Top, doing that section as an out-and-back. I returned to the group, took some photos, and listened to Caroline play and sing "Rocky Top." The panoramic views from Rocky Top are, in my opinion, one of the best in the Smokies. After resting and as the activities died down, I said my goodbyes and hiked down to the Bote Mountain Trail. This is where I started my run back to Cades Cove. I ran the entire downhill way back for a total time of 1 hour and 33 minutes. Anthony Creek Trail (Approx. 3.5 miles one-way) Start: The trail begins at the far end of the Cades Cove Picnic Area. Bote Mountain Trail (Approx. 1.7 miles one-way) At the end of Anthony Creek Trail, you'll turn right onto the Bote Mountain Trail. This section is steeper and more difficult than the first part of Anthony Creek Trail. Appalachian Trail (AT) (Approx. 1.2 miles one-way to Rocky Top) After about 1.7 miles on Bote Mountain Trail, you will reach the Appalachian Trail at Spence Field, a beautiful grassy bald. Turn left onto the AT. Remember: you MUST have a parking pass when parked inside the Great Smoky Mountains longer than 15 minutes.
