Your leadership is actually on the line if you cannot manage the particular skill of handling conflict. And that is the topic of today’s Leadership Skills Training video. So, how to handle conflict? How to handle conflict as a leader? How to deal with conflict in a team? Whether you are a small business, head of department, top executive or you run a huge business, whatever your role is you will inevitably find yourself handling conflict. What is the best way to handle conflict you may ask, well keep watching the rest of the video to find out. My name is Chris Igwe, I am a global leader with about 35 years’ experience in the Retail/Real Estate sector, working across many different countries. What I have done is create, grow, and lead amazing teams during my career and through those unavoidably conflict handling has been a big part. Let us jump right into the subject now - how to handle conflict? Handling conflict is about negotiation. And the one important thing to remember about conflict handling is that conflicts most often arise out of ego, jealousy, lack of promotion, lack of conformity to a certain way in which business should be run, economic aspects such as competing for revenue, sales, bonuses. Now, at times as a leader you may say to yourself “let them figure it out” but that is actually escaping the inevitable train wreck that is going to happen, because it will, and not only for those individuals who are in conflict but also with the whole team and department and that will affect how they see you as a leader. I am going to share with you some specific aspects on the best way to resolve conflict. You first action should really be setting up a meeting with the people involved in the conflict and then keep following the below guidelines. #1 GROUND RULES You have to establish the ground rules. And this means that you basically have to acknowledge that there is a problem between the two parties, that it needs to be dealt with efficiently, expose the process of the meeting and how that is going to roll, and what you want out of this. #2 EEACH SPEAKS You should allow each person to speak and to say what the problem is, how it arose and give you some examples. Dealing with conflict as a leader, it is important that you hear “how”, “when”, and have some examples. #3 YOU REPEAT After you have heard both of them, now it is time for you to repeat what you have heard them both say. And then you ask each one of them “Have I understood everything correctly?” This step is vitally important when handling conflict in the workplace. #4 SOLUTION/RESOLUTION The final point of how to handle employee conflict in the workplace is you suggesting a solution.
