Practise speaking everyday sentences plus a passage of English (British) and extend your listening and pronunciation skills. I'm Ruth, your tutor, a speech and language therapist by profession, who also teaches English as a second language (ESL). Join me in this video as I guide you through speaking a passage from a book in English. In this lesson, we practise shadowing and mirroring British English using a short passage from The Little Village School by Gervase Phinn. Settle in for a longer lesson today. It is suitable lesson for all levels. This time it is especially relevant for B1 to C2. Even at C2 we sometimes need to fine tune pronunciation. The language will stretch A1and A2 .... but you will enjoy the rhythm and intonation of the language. Link to The Little Village School: / the-little-village-school Shadowing means listening carefully and copying the rhythm, stress, and intonation of natural English. It is not about speaking perfectly - it is about tuning your ear and your voice to how English really sounds. Close listening skills are developed as well as clearer pronunciation of English. I take the approach a step further using a 'mirroring' technique where we speak together, in unison, after shadowing. This combined with 'shadowing' gives your flow and intonation of English a boost. In this video, you will: Listen to everyday sentences for real conversations Then listen to a short, clear passage repeat and shadow at a gentle pace (shadowing) notice rhythm, linking, and natural pronunciation practise speaking without stopping to analyse every word say the passage with Ruth in unison (mirroring) This kind of practice is especially helpful if: you understand English but feel hesitant speaking pronunciation feels difficult when you speak freely you want your English to sound more natural and fluent The story has interesting dialogue and description, and is very British — ideal for listening practice without pressure. ✨ Take your time. ✨ You don’t need to get everything “right”. ✨ Let your ear lead, and your voice will follow.
