Listen to the calm sounds of a remote village in West Africa's Sahel region. The dry savannahs of Eastern Senegal rarely get any outside visitors. There are a handful of villages dotted on the map here, but the Sahel is a tough place to live in. The rainy season is short, and for the rest of the year the land is scorched by the sun. Agriculture is limited to a handful of very resilient crops, and livestock rearing is only possible in small numbers. The few cows, donkeys, sheep, goats and chickens here are free range and have to expend lots of energy to find little food in this landscape. People living in the Sahel are used to these conditions though. There is not such thing as wasted resources here. Everything is used and mended and reused again. Food scraps are not refuse, they feed other animals around the homestead. People don't overconsume, because resources are limited and that is on everyone's mind. They rely on their community when times are tough, and this is how it's been for millennia. Very similar to my upbringing, even though the landscapes were different. The sounds of the Sahel are not as lively and lush as other African soundscapes, but there is beauty in the sparseness. I recorded this while w were camping some distance away from the village, just before sunrise. People were still sleeping in their huts, but the birds and livestock had already woken up. Enjoy!
