Panther Flat Campground, Smith River Recreation Area Panther Flat Campground is on the north end of the Redwood National and State Parks. We were less than 10 miles outside the national and state parks. The campgrounds in the National and State Parks are actually run by California. You have to have reservations to camp inside the national and state parks, and you cannot get same day reservations. We talked with a ranger to see about doing some dispersed camping, but while the Redwood National Forest is gorgeous, it is also very wet. We decided against dispersed camping because we didn't want to stay at a dispersed place where we might be camping on dirt, rather than an asphalt pad. Panther Flat Campground has 39 sites that are first come, first serve sites. Some will accommodate larger RVs. Site 17 was our favorite. It wasn't available when we pulled in, but it's a great campsite. It's large and it's very close to the flush toilets. It's on a bluff that overlooks the river, and there is a path from the campsite to the river. Some of the trees near the river shed their bark. They are peeling madrone trees and the bark just peels off. The trees are shiny after the bark has peeled. The cost for this campground was $15 per night, but with a senior pass, it is $7.50. If you are 62 or older and you go to national parks or camp in Army Corps of Engineers Campgrounds or national forests, that lifetime pass will easily pay for itself.
