In this video, I explored Yangon city’s famous Ruby Stone Market, one of the most fascinating and vibrant gemstone trading hubs in Myanmar. Walking through the busy lanes filled with traders, collectors, and brokers was truly an eye-opening experience. From small street-side deals to serious gemstone negotiations, the energy of this market is something you have to see to believe! Myanmar (formerly Burma) is world-famous for its legendary rubies, especially the rare and highly valuable “Burmese Ruby” from the Mogok region. For centuries, Myanmar has produced some of the finest rubies in the world, known for their deep “pigeon blood” red color. These rubies have been treasured by royal families, collectors, and luxury jewelry brands globally. The history of Myanmar’s ruby mining dates back over 800 years, making it one of the most significant gemstone sources in history. During this exploration, I also learned about the difference between the genuine gemstone markets and the black market trading that still exists in certain areas. While licensed gemstone shops and official markets provide certified stones with documentation, there is also an underground black market where stones are traded informally without proper certification or regulation.
