Hello All, I am NEWMAN. Please click on Subscribe to stay updated with latest technologies. Today we are going to deep dive into NAS or Network Attached Storage Remember Server Data can be stored on 3 types of Storage Devices. DAS, NAS & SAN. So we are going to see the features of NAS. This is how a NAS architecture looks like. On the right side you see a NAS Storage Array or a NAS Filer. It consists of Disk Shelves with disks in it and a Data Mover or Filer Head that controls these disks The NAS Filer is connected our normal usual Ethernet network where all you servers, clients & network printer are connected. Lets see how NAS Works. The NAS Storage Array is administered or managed by through its own Administration Console or Graphical Console or Command Line The File Systems is created on the NAS Filer itself. Remember this is a very important keyword and concept of NAS. It means that the Hard Disk Drive in the NAS Storage Array is formatted by the Filer itself. Once the File System and Folders are ready, they can be mounted onto the Servers. Now the Server can store data onto its folders. You can access the shared folders form the server using wack wack filer name folder name, similar to how you use shared folders between computers. Or you can map the shared folder a Zee Drive onto you server If we talk about I/O - Chunks of Files are being transferred over the network As we learnt earlier DAS was dedicated to the server it was attached to. That problem is now overcome, Storage Array can now be shared across servers NAS Storage Array can easily join your environment by simply plugging into the existing Ethernet network. NAS can server both Windows & Unix Server simultaneously. The storage array can be made highly available by creating clusters of multiple arrays in a group. The storage array can be expanded by adding disk shelves. The Data is secured by authentication mechanism and only users with proper permissions can access the Files & Folders There are some drawbacks too related to NAS. The Ethernet network is itself single point of failure. There could be limited network bandwidth Since the traffic between the servers and the storage is on the common LAN, there could be bandwidth contention and response times might be longer when the network is busy Finally there are several vendors manufacturing NAS filers with varying capacities. So the processing capacity of the NAS filer itself can be limited, there will be finite number of connections that can go into the filer. With this we complete studying about NAS. We are going to discuss about SAN in detail in the next video. Thank You guys for watching this video, I hope you have learnt about NAS Technologies.
