Julie Newmar - FIRST TIME WATCHING - REACTION VIDEO For the full reaction, please sign up to my patreon at www.patreon.com/thatssotreyah Instagram @thatssotreyah About the film Noxeema, Vida and Chi-Chi, three Drag Queens from New York, get stranded after their car breaks down en route to Los Angeles where they plan to participate in the Drag Queen of the Year contest. Starring: Wesley Snipes; Patrick Swayze; John Leguizamo; Stockard Channing; Blythe Danner; Arliss Howard; Chris Penn Genre: Comedy My thoughts on the film: I really enjoyed the film, I thought the performances by Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo were brilliant. John's performance as Chi Chi was especially nuanced and hilarious at times. I thought that it would have been great if we had learnt about Noxeema and Chi Chi's upbringings also so that we could relate to them more, and see their full stories. I think it would've made them more three dimensional and real as characters, as at times they can come off as caricaturistic. I wish there was more clarification as to the gender of the characters, as it seems to me that they are actually living their lives and passing as women. Surely this means that they are transgender and not just drag queens? It would have been great to delve more into the difficulties of passing, and their day to day lived experiences. At times it feels like their passing is a bit of a joke, though there are points in the story where this experience is highlighted. For example, when Noxeema fears being 'clocked' by Carol Ann when they arrive at her motel, and she asks Chi Chi to turn the room light off. I also feel that it would have been great if there were higher stakes at the start of the film. Why were the ladies so desperate to go to LA, what would that competition mean to them and their lives, professionally and financially? Were they broke? Also the drag queen points did not seem like a strong enough reason for Chi Chi to stay with the girls. I thought it wasn't that believable that she would need these points from them, especially as she was already competing in balls and would have likely had a good knowledge of the drag world already. If this was the case, the writers could have made Chi Chi more of a complete novice at drag, and we could have perhaps seen her be thrown out of home for example. Though we did see her being attacked in the streets at the beginning of the film. I think that the seriousness of life as a trans woman/ person could have been delved into more, as in many ways this film does make light of this existence, as the ladies seem to breeze quite easily through life. The actors do not appear to pass as cis women, and the lived experience of being non passing trans individual could have been represented more realistically. At times the comedy and caracaturistc nature of the story telling can feel rather frustrating. Considering when this film was made (1995), I feel that I can give it some grace despite my criticisms. There were many heartfelt moments in the script, laugh out load moments, and incredible one liners. A must watch for queer cinematic history? Absolutely.
