(19 Oct 2013) Security in Kampala, Uganda's capital, was heightened on Saturday after the U.S embassy put out an alert to a possible terror attack. Armed policemen with sniffer dogs were at major shopping malls searching cars and civilians as they go in for shopping. The heightened security measures come after the Al-Qaida linked militant group Al-Shabab killed more than 60 and injured more than 100 civilians in a deadly attack at the Westgate Mall in Kenya's capital, Nairobi. Speaking to The Associated Press, Uganda's police spokesman said they were aware of an imminent threat and that the American alert was a corroboration of the information the security forces already had. "The terror alert by the US was simply a corroboration of the information we already had that there was a plan for an attack at us by terrorists of especially Al-Shabab. So we've taken it very seriously and we have moved our alertness to an extraordinary alertness level in the city centre and the surrounding," said Edin Senkumbi. He further added the Ugandan security forces were investigating whether the potential attackers were already in the country and where they might carry out the attack. A restaurant in Kampala was the scene of an explosion in 2010 where fans had gathered to watch a World Cup football match. More than 70 people died during that attack.
