(7 Jul 1999) Serbo-Croat/Nat Thousands of angry Serbs have rallied in the central Serbian town of Uzice to demand the resignation of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. Opposition leaders gave rousing speeches in Uzice on Tuesday, cheered on by the crowd. Demonstrators chanted, "Leave, Milosevic, leave," and waved banners with the same message for the Yugoslav leader. In sweltering heat, the crowd of about six-thousand people greeted Serbia's main opposition leader, Zoran Djindjic. Djindjic is the leader of the Democratic Party. Other activists from the Alliance for Change - an umbrella group for Serbia's pro-democracy parties - were at the rally on Tuesday. The organisers said they ignored a police warning to call off the protest. As the crowd of angry Serbs swelled, no substantial police presence was visible in the area. Djindjic said Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic had caused nothing but hardship for the Serbian people. SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) "For ten years Milosevic has been fighting wars with tanks, but those wars always end with Serbs leaving on the tractors." SUPER CAPTION: Zoran Djindjic, Serbian opposition leader This rally is just part of the mounting pressure against the Serbian government to step down. In Leskovac, in southern Serbia, there was another opposition rally earlier on Tuesday, with a more explosive atmosphere. There, protesters clashed with police when they approached a police station where activist Ivan Novkovic was being held.
