A road of the former commune of Belleville, traced on the Jouvin de Rochefort map of 1672, it was known as "Chemin du Ménil-Mautemps," "Chaussée de Ménilmontant," and "Avenue de Ménilmontant." Classified as a Parisian road by decree of May 23, 1863, it took its current name in 1869. It was the site of several barricades during the 1848 Revolution and the Paris Commune.
