The first job is to get the ram piped up and the proper bolts in the clamps for the head. I use our International 1255 tractor to push the ram out so I can see where abouts I need to fabricate the blade. To make the blade itself, I use some 150x20 bucket edge. This is beveled with the plasma cutter in preparation for the weld. The edges are tacked together preheated to 150c and welded together. Next job is to cut a rectangle out of the main beam so that the blade can slot into it, this is done with the hand held plasma torch. With the blade in place, I add some 100x12 flat bar to strengthen the end and then cnc plasma cut some more strengthener plates to hold the blade in place and to add strength back in that was lost from cutting out the blade slot. Everywhere where there’s going to be weld is ground clean, the plates and tacked into position and then the whole log splitter is turned on its side and the plates welded in. It was also a good opportunity for me to practice some vertical welding. To support the blade some more, I change the the cnc machine into oxy/propane mode and flame cut a backer out of some 30mm plate. This is welded into place with some more vertical welding. To stop the logs from rolling off the sides I add some rails, the plates to support the rails are cut out of 15mm. These plates also double up as ribs to help stop the flange of the beam from twisting. The rails are 100x12 flat bar. With everything welded up, I put the log splitter onto our John Deere 6155R that has a lot more oil flow so its not as slow. As a bit of a test my dad and me split a few logs. There's a few little issues that need sorting out but overall it was a successful test run. Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
