Laura Belin recorded this video during an Iowa Senate Judiciary subcommittee meeting on February 9, 2026.Republican State Senators Jason Schultz and Cherielynn Westrich and Democratic State Senator Janice Weiner were considering Senate Study Bill 3115, which would restrict the provision of abortion medications in Iowa and place many new burdens on health care providers. Physicians would have to provide medically inaccurate information about the risks of abortion medications and the possibility of abortion reversals. Although the bill refers to "informed consent," one speaker at this subcommittee said it is more like "misinformed consent." The bill would also require providers to report any complications from a medication abortion to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. It would also allow a "private cause of action" against providers who allegedly provided abortion medications in violation of this bill. Text of bill: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislatio... Schultz commented near the beginning of the meeting that he intends to amend the bill before bringing it to the full Senate Judiciary Committee sometime the following week. He said it was intended to address the "black market" providing abortion medications by mail, not Iowa-based providers. Many members of the public and lobbyists spoke for and against the bill. Every medical professional or person representing medical or public health organizations opposed the bill. They warned that it would harm patients and exacerbate Iowa's shortage of OB/GYNs. Representatives of various anti-abortion groups spoke in favor. This video shows the entire proceeding, except that the recording was interrupted briefly during Senator Weiner's comments near the end. The recording picks up, but several seconds of her words were skipped. Weiner voted against advancing the bill, warning it would. Her Republican colleagues voted to move it to the full Judiciary Committee.
