The danger of over-fertilizing your plants is a lot more serious and urgent than if you underfeed. I use a direct-stick EC tester to estimate whether my plants have too many nutrients in their soil. This method is not as accurate as other tests, but has the advantage of being quick and easy. Take it with a grain of salt, so to speak!
