Out of the three cases you mentioned, two had certain other motives than rowdyism or area domination. The impression that these cases attributes to lawlessness or intelligence failure can be strongly rebutted. What we have to see is how we reacted to these. From Anna University case to the recent Arakkonam incident, there are allegations of dmk functionaries being protected by cops. What is your straight response to these accusations? There's a conviction in the Anna University case already. I don't understand how there can there be conviction if there was protection. The accused's sentencing is going to be pronounced on June 2 in the Anna Univ case. In the Arakkonam case, the photograph and the video of the two persons getting married in a temple and their transactions thereafter.. everything has been stated in our press release. Any population if you take there will be some people who belong to a certain religion or political party. Tamil Nadu police, never even once, have been partisan to anybody in recent times. We arrest anyone from any party if they committed an offense. For us a crime is a crime So there is no political influence at all? - Not at all. I've given you the example of Anna Univ case. The accused has got convicted in 5 months. Arakkonam case is still building up. In due course we'll see what comes up. Some say there are delays in registration of FIRs and the investigation is a bit compromised.. these are the allegations. What is the police department's answer Mostly no. 18 encounters since 2021. Human rights activists are raising concerns. Response? We are very sensitive about it. In self defense, the police department has the right as per law to use force. In TN the instances of fire being opened and the other person not being killed are large. TN police are not going after people to do extra judicial killings. I strongly denounce this. Since last 26 months, there has been no custodial death. Is the TN police department struggling to control the drug menace? - No not at all. Supply reduction aspect and demand reduction aspect..both have to go hand in hand to control drug menace. Supply reduction is the police part. The menace is there. We don't want to be like other countries where this issue is very very bad. We are concentrating on reducing it. On Villupuram and Kallakuruchi hooch tragedies in which tens lost lives, was the police department not aware of the hooch sales or was there a compromise in investigation? Either way, this seems to be an issue the police department failed to focus on - Deaths because of illicit liquor is a very painful thing. It has happened in two instances in TN. There has been some slackness I feel. In both the cases, it was methanol which was brought in to be sold as ethanol. That methanol should also be controlled. We are checking all persons who deal with methanol.
