Ahmadinejad was greeted by Castro at the Palace of the Revolution where they both reviewed an honour guard and held private talks. Cuban officials have not confirmed if a meeting with revolutionary leader Fidel Castro took place earlier in the day. Moments before meeting with President Castro, Ahmadinejad placed a wreath at Revolution Square in remembrance of Cuban national hero, Jose Marti. Earlier in the day, he was presented with an honorary doctorate from the University of Havana Ahmadinejad will spend less than 24 hours on the island. Before Cuba, the Iranian president visited Venezuela and Nicaragua. He has been promoting friendships with allies in the Americas, shortly after Washington imposed tougher sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear programme. Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Ecuador have rejected efforts to "demonise" Ahmadinejad and his government, and are critical of US actions on Iran. The US and other countries say that Iran is attempting to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran denies the accusations and maintains that the programme is purely for peaceful purposes. Ahmadinejad travels to Ecuador on Thursday.
