In "Winter Trains & Chat" I spend about an hour watching trains live around the Ottumwa, Iowa area, and talking with those in the live chat about various railroad topics and video projects I'm working on. Unlike some of my previous livestreams where I remain stationary at one spot, a portion of these streams take place from my car, and I drive around from location to location to see as much action as possible. This program was streamed on January 25th, 2026, and I got quite a bit of action in a short span. Waiting for trains at the Market Street parking lot east of the Amtrak station, things start out pretty quiet and I spend time talking with those in the live chat. Eventually the BNSF dispatcher starts talking to trains that are approaching, and the first train that passes turns out to be the westbound GALDMO mixed freight. Not too long after that, Amtrak's California Zephyr arrives, running on yellow signals immediately behind the previous train. Stopping at the station, we have time for the first eastbound train of the night as it passes on the opposing track. This was another mixed freight, train LINGAL, with four units of various railroads up front and another locomotive pushing on the rear. Once it clears, I drive out of the Market Street parking lot towards the other side of the station, just in time to see Amtrak departing. Slowly picking up speed, I have enough time to continue west a few blocks to the Clay Street grade crossing to see it one more time. With the tracks lined for another eastbound, I returned to the Market Street parking lot once more to see the next and what would be the last train of the night, a BNSF sand train, featuring a Montana Rail Link SD70ACe second in the lashup, and a CN Dash 9 on the rear. By this time I'd been streaming for over an hour, and I say a few more words to those in the chat before wrapping things up for the evening. Once the activity started, I ended up seeing four trains in just under a 30-minute span. Not bad at all! To jump to specific parts of the stream, click on the timestamps below!
