Pretoria-based artist Katlego Tlabela reflects on his journey, creative process, and the thinking behind his works in 𝘛𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘦 theme of 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙮 exhibition at Javett-UP Formally trained as a printmaker at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, Tlabela’s early practice was rooted in resistance art, shaped by a politically conscious upbringing. 𝘛𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘦 “moving forward” emerges from his deep engagement with archives, Black history, and Black art history. His art tackles social and political crises in post-apartheid South Africa, independent Africa, and the US, weaving themes of resistance, race, and positive representations of the Black experience. Since 2020, his practice has centered on painting fictional yet aspirational scenes of the Black elite, paying homage to historically prominent Black artists while reflecting contemporary realities. He has exhibited at prestigious venues like Zeitz MOCAA, Kunstmuseum Basel, and Art Basel. As a young artist recognised by both a university and museum before graduating, Katlego hopes young visitors leave the exhibition knowing: “it’s possible to be on these walls - but finish school.”
