Wisteria: Rescuing a neglected, overgrown, Wisteria

What if I told you a plant could hide its true potential for years, simply waiting for someone to unlock it? That's the story of this Wisteria. It was a tangled, forgotten mess. Come along as I demonstrate that even the most seemingly hopeless plants can be rescued and transformed into breathtaking displays. In this video we tame an overgrown and neglected Wisteria. This plant in this video needs major thinning of old established growth that has twisted around its self and the Arbor it rests on you will need sharp Felco clippers, a pruning saw for the larger branches and/or sharp loppers. First we clear the small branches from ground level to about 4 feet high, leaving any branches 1/2" or 10mm thick and bigger. These small leafy branches need to be removed to allow you to see the truck structure and to get better access. In our example many branches have grown through the arbor and if left intact will gradually distort the arbor. The next step is to remove twisted and dead branches. Start at the bottom and work up applying colored tags to branches you want to keep. Remove unwanted branches as you go. Ideally you want to select 5 or 6 branches that are in good condition and location as these will be trained for future flower production. It's very difficult to see what you are dealing with as the congested growth blocks your view. But as you gradually remove unwanted branches you will start to see logical branches to keep. Expect to remove well over half the volume of growth on your plant. And finally tie those remaining branches in place with garden twine on the outside of your arbor or pergola.
