If you’ve ever been told to "just sound more natural" on air, and then thought, "okay, but how?" -- this video is for you! Don't be Artificial. Be human. Here's how: 1. Know, memorize, that first line as your anchor turns to you. That way you can start your first sentence still looking at him or her before turning to the camera. 2. Truly know your stories. 3. Gesture. Use your hands, make natural gestures when talking, just don’t over-do it. 4. Work on sight-editing. 5. Wear a lav mic (if possible). 6. Put your phone down (if reporting). 7. Watch anchors/reporters you admire. Who do you watch who is conversational, personable and engaging? 8. Watch yourself. I know. I hate it too. But you will get better. 9. Use your natural voice: annunciate, project, from the chest 3. Punch certain words: emphasize words as if you're talking to friends. 4. Take short pauses between words (if needed). 5. Don’t read each sentence with the same cadence: alter pace, not too fast or too slow, breathe - slow down if need be. 6. Don’t end each sentence with the same pitch. 7. Talk like you’re speaking with a friend, relaxed. You’re being yourself, but your best self. Buttoned up. Reliable but real.
