Liam:We're going to learn about a famous writer from India and her amazing book. Chloe:This will help you practice your English while learning about great literature. Liam:So let's get started Chloe:Let's do it Liam:Hey everyone, and welcome to 'Bookmarked!' Today, we're going to talk about a really incredible author and, uh, her super famous book. Chloe:I think I know who you're talking about! Is it Arundhati Roy from India? Liam:You got it! We're talking about Arundhati Roy. Uhm, so before she was a famous writer, she actually worked on movies. Chloe:Oh, really? Liam:Yeah, but then, in 1992, she started writing her first book. Chloe:And that book was 'The God of Small Things.' What a great title. It makes you wonder, what is it about? Liam:It's such a good question. The book is really about how tiny little things Chloe:Like what? Liam:a word, a look, a small choice Chloe:Right. Liam:can change your entire life. It's a..a powerful idea. Chloe:So who is the story about? Liam:It's about a family in a small town in India. And the main characters we follow are a brother and sister. Chloe:Okay. Liam:They're twins named Estha and Rahel. The story is told from their point of view when they're kids. Chloe:I love stories about siblings. So we see the world through the eyes of Estha and Rahel? Liam:Exactly. And the story, umm, it jumps back and forth. So, one chapter you're with them as kids Chloe:Right. Liam:and the next, they're grown-ups looking back. So you slowly, you know, figure out that something tragic happened in their childhood. Chloe:A mystery! So, what happened? Liam:Well, there are these powerful rules in their town about who can love who. Chloe:Hmm. Liam:They're called 'Love Laws.' And their mother, Ammu, breaks these rules. Chloe:How does she break the rules? Liam:She falls in love with a man named Velutha. He's a carpenter who is kind and good. Chloe:Okay. Liam:But... because of some very old, unfair social rules in India called the caste system, Chloe:Right... Liam:he's considered to be from a 'lower' group. So, their love is a huge, dangerous secret. Chloe:Wow. So they couldn't be together? Liam:They couldn't. It was forbidden. And then, at the same time, their cousin Sophie visits from England. Chloe:Okay. Liam:And a very sad accident happens by the river. That accident and the secret love story kind of... crash together. Chloe:Oh no. Liam:It completely breaks the family. Chloe:That sounds heartbreaking. So it all connects back to the title… how these "small things" lead to a huge family tragedy. Liam:Exactly. And the way Roy writes is... it's amazing. She plays with words to make you feel like you're a kid. Chloe:Yeah? Liam:For example, she describes the person selling sodas as the 'Orangedrink Lemondrink man'—all squished together. Chloe:Oh, that's so cool! It really sounds like how a kid would say it. The book must have been a big deal. Liam:A huge deal. It won one of the biggest awards a book can win— Chloe:Which one? Liam:the Booker Prize. And you know what she did with the prize money? Chloe:I think I do! She gave it all away to help people, right? To support human rights. Liam:Yep. She used it to speak up against things she felt were unfair. So, this book wasn't just a story. Chloe:Right. Liam:It started important conversations all over the world about fairness and justice. It's a powerful story about two kids, Estha and Rahel, whose lives are changed forever by secrets and unfair rules. Chloe:It really shows you that nothing is ever truly 'small.' Liam:Hmm. Chloe:Even a little moment can have a huge impact. Liam:That's the perfect way to say it. Now, here's a question we'd like you to think about... Chloe:Think about a 'small thing'—like a word someone said, or a quick moment you saw—that you still remember perfectly today. Why do you think that one small thing stuck with you for so long? Liam:Well, that's all for today's episode Chloe:I hope you enjoyed learning about Arundhati Roy and her amazing book 'The God of Small Things. Liam:Remember, even small things can make a big difference in your life. Chloe:Keep reading, keep learning, and keep thinking about the world around you. Liam:Thanks for listening to our podcast Chloe:See you next time Liam:Goodbye everyone Chloe:Bye
