The construction of an 11m embankment adjacent to the East Coast Main Line had the potential to cause movement of the railway embankment and rail infrastructure due to the nature of the underlying clay soil. The footprint for this embankment was substantial and the engineering required to support this embankment without potentially causing movement to the East Coast Main Line would have been extensive. Numerous options which included expanded polystyrene fill were studied, extending the bridge with additional spans, cellular structures and piled load transfer platforms with reinforced concrete retaining walls. Construction with large equipment adjacent to the railway was a major consideration since there was limited opportunities to close the railway and carry out major lifting operations. The cost effective solution was developed utilising a small number of vibrated stone columns in the formation in conjunction with a reinforced earth modular block wall and Leca® LWA reduced formation loading to approximately one quarter of what could have been imposed using normal weight fill.
