Judging by the large number of instruments that survive, the streichzither and its close relatives (the philomele, streichmelodeon, schossviolone and violinett) were very popular in Southern Germany and Austria during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The streichzither is tuned like a violin or viola, but with the strings in reverse order. The intended playing position is with the instrument pointing towards the body (see the old pictures at 0:31 in the video), but I am using a position which is less awkward (for me, at least). The tune is one of many for the carol "In the Bleak Midwinter". I heard it on television in the 1980s (?) and copied it down, but I don't know who wrote it -- apologies to the composer for the lack of credit. Sheet music is at http://stellatripp.co.uk/IanInstrumen... . This instrument can be seen in my Musical Instrument Museum at http://stellatripp.co.uk/IanInstruments .
