Vice President JD Vance says he's going to wait until after the upcoming midterm elections to discuss his political future with President Donald Trump. Vance addressed a possible White House run in 2028, saying he wants to first focus on securing GOP victories in 2026. “After that, I’m going to sit down with the president of the United States and talk to him about it,” Vance said during a wide-ranging interview with Fox News that aired on Thursday. “If we do a good job, the politics will take care of itself. If we do a terrible job, the politics will take care of itself in the other direction, so I’m just going to focus on the job that I have.” Speculation has been growing about Vance's political ambitions and whether he intends to launch a presidential bid. But Vance said it's important that right now, he doesn't get distracted from his current job as vice president. “I've thought about what that moment might look like after the midterm elections, sure, but ... whenever I think about that, I try to put it out of my head and remind myself: The American people elected me to do a job right now. And my job is to do it,” he said. Trump suggested earlier this month that the Democratic Party would be far more likely to win the midterm elections and the next presidential election if Republicans did not terminate the filibuster, with the Senate's 60-vote threshold a barrier to the successful implementation of his policies. Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress. The GOP enjoys a 53–45 majority in the Senate, though two independent senators caucus with their Democratic colleagues. In the House of Representatives, four vacancies mean that the Republicans have a 219–212 majority. According to the election tracker Ballotpedia, Democrats need to gain four seats in the 2026 midterms to gain a majority in the Senate. Meanwhile, Republicans can afford to lose no more than two seats to retain their majority in the upper chamber. Vance said he wants to make sure Republicans maintain control in Congress so the Democrats don't erase everything that Trump has accomplished. “I really want us to win the midterms, because if the Democrats get in power, they’re going to try to screw up a lot of the great things the president of the United States has done over the past 10 months,” Vance said. “So we’re going to win the midterms, we’re going to do everything we can to win the midterms.” According to Vance, Trump has set in motion the “long-term economic revitalization” of the United States. But he also noted that some of Trump's measures may take time to bear fruit, and that he therefore prefers to focus on the midterms. During the interview, Vance praised Trump's ability to compartmentalize any crises and to focus on troubleshooting one problem before quickly moving on to the next. -- 🧶More NTD Programs: https://www.ntd.com/programs?utm_sour... -- 🇺🇸 Stay updated with breaking news, special reports, and LIVE COVERAGE on NTD: https://ept.ms/NTDlive_ -- 🔵Sign up for our newsletter to stay informed with NTD News. 👉https://www.ntd.com/newsletter.htm?ut....
