The race is held on the Old Course at Cheltenham in England. It covers a distance approximately 2 miles (1 mile 7 furlongs and/or 3,199 meters) and there are 13 fences to jump during its run. This race is open to novice chasers and takes place every year at the Cheltenham Festival. This race is the National Hunt's most popular novice chase. It is the second race of the festival's opening day. In 1969, the Arkle Challenge Trophy was created to replace the Cotswold Chase. Arkle, who was a three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in the mid-1960s, is the title of the trophy. The race was originally scheduled to run on the second day, but was moved to the opening day in 1980. Waterford Castle was the first sponsor of "Arkle", which started supporting the event in 1991. From 1994 to 1999 it was supported by Guinness, while from 2000 to 2011, it was sponsored and managed by the Irish Independent newspaper. From 2012 to 2020, the race was sponsored by The Racing Post newspaper. Sporting Life sponsors the race starting in 2021. Many of the race's winners have gone on to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the most prestigious two mile chase in the National Hunt calendar. The winner of this event in 2021 was Put The Kettle On. Alverton won the 1978 Cheltenham Gold Cup. The Sporting Life Arkle Chase Challenge Trophy is the most prestigious race in jumps season. It is run over a minimum distance of 2m. The Grade 1 is a test of speed and accuracy in jumping. The Grade 1 has been won by some the most famous jump racers in history, including Altior and Sprinter Sacre, who went on to win Queen Mother Champion Chase the next season.
