Jaffna International Airport, formerly known as Palaly Airport, is situated in Palaly, approximately 16 kilometers north of Jaffna city in Sri Lanka's Northern Province. The airport's IATA code is JAF, and its ICAO code is VCCJ. Historical Background Constructed by the Royal Air Force during World War II, the airport initially served as a military airfield. Post-war, it transitioned to civilian use, facilitating domestic flights to Colombo and Trincomalee, as well as international routes to South India. During the Sri Lankan Civil War, the airport was under military control, but domestic civilian flights resumed in the mid-1990s. In 2019, it was reestablished as Sri Lanka's third international airport. Facilities and Infrastructure The airport features a single asphalt runway, designated 05/23, measuring 1,400 meters in length and 30 meters in width. The elevation is approximately 10 meters above sea level. The terminal is equipped to handle international arrivals and departures, with customs and immigration facilities in place. Airlines and Destinations As of December 2022, Alliance Air operates thrice-weekly flights connecting Jaffna and Chennai, India. Plans are underway to expand services to other Indian cities, including Bangalore, Cochin, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Future developments aim to extend the runway to 2,300 meters, enabling the accommodation of larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and A321, thereby facilitating flights to additional parts of Asia and Europe. Access and Connectivity The airport is accessible via the A9 Highway, with transportation options including taxis and buses connecting it to Jaffna city and surrounding areas. Future Developments The development of Jaffna International Airport is planned in multiple phases. Phase 1 involved extending the runway to 1,400 meters. Phase 2 plans to further extend the runway to 2,300 meters, allowing the airport to handle 150-seater aircraft. Phase 3 aims to extend the runway to 3,200 meters, enabling accommodation of 200-seater aircraft and expanding the airport's connectivity to more international destinations.
