After being chosen as a finalist in the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) competition, Duprey Video Productions was commissioned by the committee to produce this video. The video was used as part of the final presentation to the panel of judges. Waterloo was chosen as the winner of 10 million dollars, and we are proud to have helped in achieving this goal, on the fourth attempt. The following is a transcript of the video presentation. Visual Intro 45 sec..... Waterloo is a 10-minute drive from Exit 41 of the NYS Thruway. Downtown is located at the intersection of Routes 96 and 5 & 20. We are the missing link that will connect previous recipients, Auburn, Seneca Falls, & Geneva, making the Finger Lakes THE destination for tourism and recreation. The Village of Waterloo, New York, the official Birthplace of Memorial Day, is a unique and beautiful community. While its downtown has recently been added to the National Registry of Historic Places, Waterloo is deeply connected to its past, while moving confidently into its future. Consultant driven Downtown Needs Assessments have identified problems, or better yet, opportunities, and the village is taking steps in a focused, organized way by crafting its first ever Comprehensive Plan with Main Street as the central focus. Effectively utilizing the tools at their disposal to improve the village, they have participated in Community Development Block Grant Programs including Microenterprise, Housing, RestoreNY (Grange) and BridgeNY (Locust St.). Notably, the village has recently worked with the DOT to reduce Main Street from four lanes to two while adding a bike lane. It is intended to make it safer for people to walk and bike while also slowing traffic so that drivers and walkers alike can appreciate the historic character of this charming village, promoting economic activity as well as healthy living. It is also believed that capitalizing on existing resources and improving connectivity and accessibility to downtown from the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, as well as neighboring communities is a key to success. The Village of Waterloo is also home to the National Memorial Day Museum, American Civil War Memorial, Lafayette Park, Canal Lock #4, Oak Island, and a portion of the Cayuga Seneca Canal Trail. All on or within an easy walk to downtown. Main Street gives a whole new meaning to the term “it takes a village.” In the past 5 years Waterloo has obtained more than 3 million dollars to improve the downtown area. This committee will continue to partner with our developers to enhance the areas of downtown Waterloo. As we implement our proposed DRI we will improve our transportation, business opportunities, and recreation for thousands of visitors vacationing in the Finger Lakes, while remaining sensitive to our residents needs for housing. With your partnership we will continue to connect the canal system to our downtown area, and enhance Waterloo for visitors, businesses, and residents.
