Rare access: Inside India’s claims to eliminate Maoist insurgency | BBC News India

The Indian government claims it is only months away from eliminating the country’s decades-old Maoist insurgency that has affected parts of central, eastern and southern India. The communist-led rebellion, that has roots in pre-independence India, claims to fight the government on behalf of the locals against exploitation and has entrenched itself in these forested regions. According to the government, the number of insurgency-affected districts has now fallen to 11 across multiple states in the the country. Among these, the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh has been most significant base of the insurgents in recent years. And it is here that the government claims, through a mix of development-oriented policies and persistent security measures, it has put the Maoist insurgents on the backfoot. Local authorities credit the District Reserve Guard (DRG) - a force made up of locals and former insurgents - for leading this effort. BBC’s Jugal Purohit and Seraj Ali spent days in the region, interacting with the DRG. They also met local communities, some of whom pointed to the excesses committed by the police and DRG personnel.
