2025 National History Teacher of the Year Award Ceremony

The 2025 National History Teacher of the Year is Valencia Abbott, an educator with over two decades of experience who serves as the Social Studies Department Chair and as a civics teacher at Rockingham Early College High School in Wentworth, North Carolina. Valencia was presented this year’s award by her former student Natalie Jones and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and essayist Stacy Schiff. Valencia and the other 52 states and US territory winners were celebrated at an award ceremony in New York City on November 5, 2025. Started in 2004, the Gilder Lehrman Institute's National History Teacher of the Year program recognizes excellence in the teaching of history at the K–12 level. Each year, thousands of teachers are nominated by students, parents, fellow teachers, and community members, shining a light on the important work they do.
