Jacob Wendt in a graduate jazz recital, California State University, Fullerton. Wednesday, March 16, 2022. In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Music, Performance: Joe Gordon: A Force in the Music - the music of Joe Gordon (1928-1963). Band: Harry Ostrander, trumpet Spencer Wiles, alto saxophone Aaron Provisor, piano Jonathan Kirsh, bass Jacob Wendt, drums Program Notes: Within his relatively short career, Joe Gordon performed and recorded both as a leader and sideman with some of the biggest names in jazz history. He was a gifted bebop player who shared the stage with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Kenny Clarke. He was a significant figure in the history and development of hard bop, performing with Art Blakey, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, and Horace Silver. Gordon’s work as a big band soloist is well-documented on records with Herb Pomeroy, Benny Carter, and Dizzy Gillespie. And although his name is often most associated with his West Coast and cool jazz ties to artists like Shelly Manne, Ritchie Kamuca, and Barney Kessel, Gordon also blurred the lines between straight-ahead and avant-garde playing, as can be heard on albums by Harold Land and Jimmy Woods. My research, a thorough examination of Joe Gordon’s life and musical accomplishments, shows his profound impact within the jazz community during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. Additionally it documents Gordon’s role within the West Coast jazz scene to better understand the political and racial aspects of the music business during that time period, bringing to light a large amount of lost or forgotten Los Angeles jazz history. Lookin’ Good! (Contemporary, 1961) was Gordon’s second and ultimately final release as a leader. His later compositions are a unique blend of modal jazz and hardbop, utilizing asymmetrical song forms, unexpected chord changes, and an energetic playing approach not commonly associated with the West Coast jazz scene of Los Angeles during the time period. All the material from this album is presented tonight, as well as a selection from Gordon’s debut solo artist recording, Introducing Joe Gordon (EmArcy, 1955). This evening’s performance is a tribute to the late trumpeter – an individual who inspired and supported countless younger musicians and made a long-lasting, positive impact within the jazz community. Joe Gordon was a true force in the music and his legacy lives on.
