Reactive and complex fluids have enormous applications in oil and gas industry ranging from well stimulation, drilling fluids in near wellbore to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) at reservoir scale. The challenging reservoir conditions of high salinity, high temperature and high pressure combined with reservoir heterogeneity introduce high-degree of uncertainty in treatment design, reservoir monitoring and large-scale modeling. A number of experimental and theoretical projects have been conducted in these areas and as a result, Dr. Abdullah Sultan established the research lab titled as “Complex and Reactive Fluids Research Laboratory (CRF).” The main focus areas of CRF are to address issues of reaction kinetics, diffusion, interfacial phenomena and phase changes associated with applications of reactive fluids (acids, emulsified acids) and complex fluids (viscoelastic surfactant, gels, foam, emulsion) in real reservoir conditions. The research laboratory have successfully developed cost effective polymers to produce thermally stable gels, developed dual system as relative permeability modifier and conformance control, extended applicability of Viscoelastic surfactants to EOR in high salinity reservoirs and conducted matrix acidizing of carbonate rocks at radial scale (experimental and simulation).
