(gluteal group) A group of 3 muscles which make up the buttocks originating from the ilium and sacrum and inserting on the femur. The functions include extension, abduction, external rotation and internal rotation of the hip joint. (gluteal muscles) • gluteus maximus: The largest and outermost. A large part of the shape and appearance of the side of the hip. Main extensor muscle of the hip. • gluteus medius: Situated on the outer surface of the pelvis. Posterior third is covered by the gluteus maximus and anterior two-thirds are covered by the gluteal aponeurosis. • gluteus minimus: Fan-shaped, arising from the outer surface of the ilium, between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines, and behind, from the margin of the greater sciatic notch.
